There are two variants in the Sumitomo Microdrill range MDUS and MDSS with sizes between 0.03 mm and 1 mm diameter.Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal has added a range of coated high performance micro drills able to produce precise holes as small as 30 micron diameter in a wide variety of materials to its high productivity MultiDrills Series. The micro drills are catalogued in two variants. MDUS is available in diameters between 0.03 mm and 0.19 mm and is coated with Sumitomo’s ultra-thin, long life TiAIN wear resistant surface and MDSS in sizes from 0.2 mm to 1 mm having the super lattice ZX TiN/AIN ultra-hard PVD coating added to a tough, highly stable carbide substrate.
The micro drill series can be applied to a wide range of materials including copper, carbon steels, alloy and die steels as well as stainless steels with full application support from Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal based in Princes Risborough.
The MDUS drill has a 120 deg point angle and a very sharp cutting edge with a 30 deg helix. It is ground to a precise tolerance of 0.003 mm, maintaining a concentricity within 0.3 micron and a roundness within 0.5 micron TIR. Flute lengths are between 0.3 and 1.8 mm. The ultra-fine coating enables high surface finishes to be attained and prevents built up edge when swarf becomes welded to the drill point and fluting. The shank diameter is 3 mm across the range.
