MTD Micro Molding, a long-time leader and expert problem solver in micro injection moulding for the medical device industry, has made a significant investment to expand their overmoulding services. As part of this investment, they recently acquired a new vertical injection moulding machine, which has been designed and further customised for higher capacity overmoulding.
Overmoulding involves two or more materials moulded together to become one part, such as moulding two plastics together or moulding plastic around a metal insert. Because overmoulding requires no foreign materials like adhesives, it’s possible to achieve greater part functionality that’s critical to medical devices, like creating a water-resistant seal.
Executive Vice President, Gary Hulecki, said the investment is in response to a growing need for precision overmoulding from their customer base. OEMs benefit from precision overmoulding by improving shot-to-shot consistency and overall part quality for their medical device components.
Common medical overmoulding components that MTD has produced include catheter tips, suturing devices, sports medicine implants, and orthopedic devices where a PEEK polymer is moulded over or through metal. A more unusual project was a 5-piece micro assembly device overmoulded with Glass Filled LCP (Liquid Crystal Polymer).
MTD Micro Molding is a vertically integrated micromoulder with all tooling services located in-house. It currently has 13 moulding presses and 31 employees.
